Apple to Livestream September Media Event

Apple:

Apple® will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple’s industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at www.apple.com.

It appears Apple would like to test drive their shiny new $1 billion data center. Is this a sign of things to come or does Steve just want to keep the “bloggers” off his Wi-Fi?

UPDATE: Steve announced major new updates to the entire iPod line, sans iPod classic, including a refreshed Apple TV. Unfortunately, none of these new products make use of an iTunes streaming feature, but that won’t stop many from rushing to the nearest Apple Store next week.

Apple Demonstrates Smartphone Antenna Performance

Apple:

All antennas — including television, radio, GPS, and cellular antennas — can experience attenuation. And with most antennas, the density and composition of the human hand can cause attenuation to a greater degree than some other materials. On a mobile phone, signal loss typically occurs when your hand attenuates the most sensitive part of the antenna.

I find it somewhat bewildering that Apple has to educate not only iPhone 4 users, but seemingly the entire electronics industry and media, about the basics of antenna design and function. On a positive note, we get to enjoy some photos and video of Apple’s stunning design and test labs.

Khoi Vinh on Apple’s Typographical Shortcomings

Khoi Vinh:

Creating a beautiful display and patting yourself on the back for having good typography is disingenuous, I think. It’s a little like saying a high-definition television set makes for better television shows; an absurd claim at best.

Instant Coffee Design Concept of the Day: Heo Jeong Im’s “Coffee On A Stick” is a relatively straight-forward concept: Pick your poison, dip it in boiling water, stir, sip, repeat. If there is a comestible in this world that isn’t instantly improved by the addition of a stick, I have yet to meet that comestible.
Watch it in action here.

Matt Langer: I Started Out Thinking About Facebook And I Ended Up Here

There’s just something about equilibrium. About balance. About objects at rest.

It makes for a lousy ontology, and yet it’s pervasive enough to tempt us in that direction, in part because we seem to see it everywhere, and in part because its aesthetic is one we’re predisposed to see everywhere,…
